I am loving the Premier Issue of Accent South Mississippi. It was great fun to write “Evolution of the Southern Summer” (page 78), and what a treat to show Nathan the article, complete with a picture of his cute little face! He said, “Wow, Mom, I’m famous!” Of course, he said the same thing the first time I showed him this website.
Accent’s fan page on facebook describes this publication as “a bi-monthly lifestyle magazine celebrating the people, places, events and flavors that make living between the Gulf Coast and the capital so pleasant.” The first issue was just released this week; a free copy can be picked up at several locations around Hattiesburg (the Visitors Center at the Lake Terrace Convention Center and the Wesley Medical Center to name a couple).
If you’re lucky enough to snag one, you’ll find a wonderful assortment of articles and photographs. There’s a special wedding section, complete with creative ideas and a peek at some local fantasy weddings. Sight-seers will enjoy the Ship Island article and insight into the future plans for the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum.
Some legitimately famous folks are spotlighted in this issue (sorry, Nathan). Native Mississippian, Tay Spreitler, who has signed a three-year contract to portray “Mia” on NBC’s “One Life to Live” shares about her exciting career in entertainment. And restauranteur, columnist, and author, Robert St. John, talks about the fun and foibles that led to his successful line of cookbooks.
There’s so much packed in this issue: recipes, gardening–even a colorful tutorial on watercolor painting by artist, Anthony Thaxton.* And it’s beautiful. After reading it, you’ll want to tuck it away in a safe place and revisit its pages again and again.
*[You will also enjoy the artwork of Chuck Terrell, mentioned in "Reinvent Yourself" on page 34. Visit his website at: www.theartofthecarpenter.com]
